“New Hyperion” is a book by Edward Strahan, also known as Earl Shinn, published in 18751. The book takes readers on a journey from Paris to Marly by way of the Rhine.

It is richly illustrated with over three hundred designs by Gustave Doré and others. The book is a part of the collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. . The book is not only a travelogue but also a reflection of the cultural and artistic milieu of the time.

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (1832-1883) was a renowned French artist, illustrator, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature, especially the Vulgate Bible and Dante’s Divine Comedy. Doré began his career as a caricaturist for the French paper Le journal pour rire1. His work was characterized by exuberant and bizarre fantasy, creating vast dreamlike scenes. Despite his success, Doré’s life was marked by a constant struggle for recognition in his home country.
