General Questions

What is nocloo ?

Well, it’s a typo for noclue, someone already took the noclue.com domain before it came to my head that’s a good name for my project. It’s a project born out of the passion for old children’s book that I’ve collected over the last 30 years. I just want to share some these amazing artworks from the great Golden Age illustrators that I love.

Sadly, many of these books are no longer in print; too expensive to acquire or totally unknown for the majority of the younger book readers. The project started as a resource for book collectors like me, but over the past few year, it has evolved into a creative source for artists, students and many others.

Where can I find the books presented on your site ?

The most natural place is Ebay.com and AbeBooks.com. You can still find some of these books in your local used bookstore. I love the later, it’s more fun to browse and have a book on-hand than buying something online and not sure of how it looks until it gets in your hands. At the same time, you are supporting these small businesses which was much driven out by the advent of the Internet and the mega online bookstores. You can also find a few on my online bookstore.

I love your site and want to help out !

Presently, the easiest way you can help out is to link from your own site and spread the words. Those who are collectors and have some books to share/donate to the project please fell free to contact me.

I’m pissed, the images are public domains and you have no rights to profit from it or put those annoying watermarks on !#@

The main goal of this project is to share my passion for the Art of the Golden Age of Illustration. As rare as it is, I do get a few e-mails from one of those users who think I should work for free. First, the images are in public domain and I’m free do do what I want with it. Second, I spent an enormous amount of time, scanning, editing each of the images presented. You didn’t.

This site has taken years (20) of work by an individual who like to share the love of children’s book. The hundreds of hours scanning and editing. Years of searches and a large amount of money to acquire those rare books for your enjoyments. So if you don’t like it, please fell free to go elsewhere or do your own. You are not paying my bills.

I have this book, print, original artworks. Can you tell me how much it is worth ?

For the most part, you can find out the value of your book by searching current and past auctions on Ebay or other auction site. It will give you a more realistic idea of what it is worth on the current market.

If you cannot find it on Ebay, abebooks.com is also good place. Price does fluctuates wildly on abebooks.com. Examine the condition of your book carefully, match it with the few cheapest price that you see to make an average price and cut 30% off that price. It’s typically what you can sell it for on Ebay, perhaps more on a good day.

If you decide to sell it to a books dealer, they will pay you about 1/2 the market price. Perhaps a bit more if it’s extremely rare and they have an existing buyer for it.

Copyright Questions

Where you do obtain the images ?

All the images on this site are personally scanned by me from my book collection. All the details about provenance of those images are mentioned in the descriptions.

Where in the world are you ?
  • I’m living in US, my site is hosted in the US and I’m subjected to US’s copyright laws only. Before you contact me about copyright violations, please make sure you own or have proof of copyright ownership of the said image(s) in the US only. I’m not subject to your country’s law.
  • Who owns the copyright on those images ?
  • Nearly all of illustrations on this site are in public domain in the US. They came from books published before 1923, thus are in public domain in the US. You may have to verify with your own country’s copyright law before using it for commercial purpose.
  • I’m doing my best to make sure that the images I use for personal and commercial purpose are in public domain in the US. However, the few that I’m not certain of and that you believe are still under copyright in the US. Please contact me so I can remove it from my site.
  • For books published between 1923 and 1963, some are in public domain. The Stanford University have published an Online Renewal Database, if a book hasn’t been renewed in the US by the original copyright owner, it is now in public domain.
I own the copyright of image(s) XXX and want to take it of your site!
  • If you believe you own the copyright of an image(s) and want to take it off my site. Please send me an e-mail with any evidence that can substantiate your claim as the rightful owner of the image(s) and I’ll be happy to comply.
  • For more infomation on copyright and public domain works, please visit:

For works published in the UK, prior to Jan 1, 1996, copyright extends to 50 years after the author’s death. After the copyright extension, it’s now 70 years after the author’s death. Also, I’m not entirely sure about the official owner(s) of the images. The publisher, who paid the artist for the works, or the artist himself. I’m assuming the original publishers own the copyright to those works, many of them are no longer in business and hard to track. I’m also not sure how the copyrights are transferred in this case. If you have any information, please let me know so I can update this page.
