Originally launched in 1935 as a pocket-sized general interest title, Raymond transformed it into a soft-core pornographic publication positioned as a sophisticated competitor to Mayfair, Playboy, and Penthouse. Published monthly from London, early issues under Raymond’s stewardship balanced serious articles and interviews with glamour photography featuring models from his Soho nightclubs . The magazine achieved considerable success, reaching a circulation of 400,000 copies monthly by 1972.
