Planetes – The Gravity of Dreams in the Void of Space
Planetes (from the Greek for “wanderers”) is a celebrated hard science fiction manga by Makoto Yukimura (later renowned for Vinland Saga). Unlike grandiose space operas, it is a profoundly humanist story set in a meticulously researched, near-future workplace. The narrative orbits the Debris Section of Technora Corporation in 2075, a derisively nicknamed “Half Section” tasked with the unglamorous, hazardous job of collecting dangerous orbital space junk.
The crew is a beautifully crafted ensemble of flawed, relatable outcasts: the idealistic and ambitious new hire, Hachimaki, who dreams of owning his own ship; the compassionate and grounded Fee Carmichael, their weary but capable chief; and the enigmatic newcomer Tanabe, whose unwavering moral philosophy constantly challenges Hachimaki’s cynical pragmatism. Their daily grind of capturing screws, discarded satellite parts, and nuclear waste with clunky suits and aging equipment forms the bedrock of the story.
Yukimura’s masterful research into astronautics and orbital mechanics provides a stunningly authentic backdrop, making the silence of space and the real physics of zero-G feel tangible and perilous. However, the manga’s true orbit is around its characters’ inner lives. Planetes uses the vast, indifferent vacuum of space as a mirror to explore weighty themes of human purpose, mortality, class disparity, political strife between Earth and the Moon, and the existential search for meaning in a seemingly insignificant job. It is a moving, thoughtful, and grounded epic that argues that cleaning up humanity’s mess among the stars is one of the most noble and human endeavors of all.
