Salvador Dalí’s Les Dîners de Gala, first published in 1973, is a cookbook that defies all conventions, existing at the vibrant intersection of surrealist art, culinary extravagance, and personal devotion. Conceived and illustrated by the artist himself, the book is dedicated to his wife and muse, Gala, and was a fulfillment of a childhood dream—Dalí once declared that at the age of six, he wanted to be a chef. The volume is a window into the legendary, opulent dinner parties the couple hosted, events known for their theatricality, elaborate costumes, and shocking, unforgettable spectacles.

True to its creator, the book opens with a warning to the reader: “If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you” . Inside, it contains 136 recipes divided into 12 thematic chapters, including exotic dishes, meats, seafood, and a notable section dedicated to aphrodisiacs, which speaks to Dalí’s lifelong fascination with the link between food, desire, and sensuality. While the recipes originated from renowned Parisian restaurants such as La Tour d’Argent and Maxim’s, they are presented through Dalí’s unique lens, resulting in dishes that are both decadent and designed to provoke.

What truly sets the book apart are its stunning illustrations—over 100 original watercolors, drawings, and collages created by Dalí specifically for the project. These images transform the cookbook into a full-fledged artwork, featuring the melting forms, erotic symbolism, and bizarre, dreamlike imagery for which he is famous. After being out of print for decades and becoming a rare collector’s item, Taschen republished a facsimile edition, allowing a new generation to experience this “multisensory adventure” that celebrates the pleasures of taste with unapologetic, surrealist abandon.
