Tarlóvirágok is a classic Hungarian historical adventure novel, first published in the early 20th century. The story is set in the 17th century, during the tumultuous period of the Turkish Wars and the Rákóczi uprisings in the Kingdom of Hungary.
The plot follows the adventures of a group of Hungarian betyárok (outlaws or freedom fighters, similar to haiduks) who operate from the wilderness, particularly the marshes and forests. These men, often seen as romantic rebels, fight against the oppressive forces of the occupying Ottoman Turks and sometimes against the corrupt Hungarian nobility.
The book is significantly elevated by the illustrations of Willy Pogány, a master of Art Nouveau and Golden Age illustration. His work for Tarlóvirágok is characterized by dynamic line work, dramatic compositions, and a strong sense of romanticism, perfectly capturing the swashbuckling spirit and historical atmosphere of the novel. A rare example of his earliest work, for the fan of Willy Pogany.
