Children of Dune is the third novel in Frank Herbert‘s epic science fiction series. Set nine years after the events of Dune Messiah, it follows the pre-teen twins of Paul Atreides, Leto and Ghanima, who possess the vast memories of their ancestors and are heirs to his turbulent empire. Their aunt Alia rules as Regent but is being possessed by the malevolent personality of Baron Harkonnen. As various factions conspire to control or destroy the twins, the ecological transformation of Arrakis threatens the spice cycle. The story culminates in Leto II’s terrifying vision of humanity’s only path to survival, known as the Golden Path, which requires a profound and shocking sacrifice. The novel is a complex exploration of power, prescience, genetic destiny, and the corrupting nature of absolute rule.
