James Blish: The Collector’s Guide to First Editions, Rare and Collectible Books

Early Life and Scientific Foundations
James Benjamin Blish was born on May 23, 1921, in East Orange, New Jersey, a suburban town within sight of the Manhattan skyline. His father, Asa Rhodes Blish, was a salesman, and his mother, Dorothea, a homemaker. The family moved frequently during the Depression, but Blish distinguished himself academically, earning a scholarship to Rutgers University. He studied biology and microbiology, graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then served as a medical laboratory technician in the United States Army during World War II, stationed primarily in the Pacific theater. After the war, he pursued graduate studies in zoology at Columbia University but left without completing a doctorate. This scientific training—particularly his understanding of biochemistry and evolutionary theory—would later give his science fiction an unusual rigor. Unlike many of his peers, Blish could write convincingly about the molecular basis of alien biology or the thermodynamic limits of interstellar travel.
The Prolific Critic and Fan
Blish began writing science fiction in the late 1930s as part of the Futurians, a legendary fan group in New York City that included Isaac Asimov, Frederik Pohl, Donald A. Wollheim, and Judith Merril. He published his first professional story, “Emergency Refueling,” in 1940. After the war, he became a full-time writer and critic, producing hundreds of book reviews for magazines such as The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. His critical writing was collected in The Issue at Hand (1964) and More Issues at Hand (1970), written under the pseudonym William Atheling Jr. These reviews, famously sharp and uncompromising, helped establish serious literary criticism as a legitimate practice within science fiction. Blish demanded coherence, intellectual honesty, and stylistic craftsmanship from his fellow authors. He was not afraid to praise or to eviscerate.
The Cities in Flight Saga
Blish’s most enduring work is the Cities in Flight series, also known as the “Okie” novels. The sequence begins with They Shall Have Stars (1956), followed by A Life for the Stars (1962), Earthman, Come Home (1955), and concludes with The Triumph of Time (1958). The premise is audacious: in a future where antigravity technology has been discovered, entire cities lift off from the surface of Earth and travel between the stars as migrant labor forces, much like the “Okies” of the Dust Bowl. The protagonist, Mayor John Amalfi of New York, navigates galactic politics, economic collapse, and the eventual heat death of the universe. The series combines hard science fiction with social commentary, exploring themes of community, mobility, and survival against cosmic indifference.
The Case of Conscience and Theological SF
Blish won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1959 for A Case of Conscience, the story of a Jesuit priest-biologist who investigates a seemingly sinless alien race on the planet Lithia. The priest concludes that the Lithians are so perfectly rational and virtuous that they cannot be God’s creation—they must be a trap set by Satan. The novel wrestles with questions of theology, evolution, and the nature of evil, pushing science fiction into territory usually reserved for Catholic philosophy. Blish later expanded the story into a tetralogy, though the sequels did not achieve the same acclaim. He also wrote novelizations of the original Star Trek television series, including the first original Star Trek novel, Star Trek 2 (1968), helping to launch the franchise’s lucrative tie-in publishing industry.
Later Life and Influence
Blish married Virginia Kidd, a literary agent and writer, in 1947. The couple had two daughters before divorcing in 1963. He later married Judith Ann Lawrence. He died of lung cancer on July 29, 1975, in Henley-on-Thames, England, at the age of 54. James Blish is remembered as a writer’s writer—a craftsman who demanded seriousness from a genre often dismissed as juvenile. His influence can be seen in the theological science fiction of Mary Doria Russell, the hard SF of Greg Egan, and the critical standards of every serious reviewer who followed.
