Edward Gorey: The Collector’s Guide to First Editions, Rare and Collectibles

Edward St. John Gorey (February 22, 1925 – April 15, 2000) was an enigmatic American artist, writer, and Tony Award-winning costume designer whose work has left an indelible mark on the worlds of literature and theater . With a distinctive style of intricate pen-and-ink drawings and a wry, ominous wit, Gorey created a universe that felt both antique and utterly unique, often set in vaguely unsettling Victorian and Edwardian landscapes.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Gorey displayed remarkable precocity from a young age, teaching himself to read by the age of three and developing an early appetite for works like Dracula and Alice in Wonderland . His artistic lineage may have been inherited from his maternal great-grandmother, a greeting card illustrator . After his parents’ divorce in 1936, he attended the progressive Francis W. Parker School in Chicago. Following a brief semester at the Art Institute of Chicago, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, serving as a clerk at Utah’s Dugway Proving Ground until 1946 . After his service, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he majored in French literature and roomed with the future poet Frank O’Hara. It was there he helped found the Poets’ Theatre, fostering a lifelong love for the stage .
A Career of Prolific Illustration
After graduating in 1950, Gorey moved to New York City and began his career in the Art Department of Doubleday Anchor, where he illustrated over 200 book covers for works by authors ranging from H.G. Wells to T.S. Eliot . In 1953, he published his first independent book, The Unstrung Harp, launching a prolific career in which he authored and illustrated more than 100 of his own works . His books, often small in format, are known for their literary nonsense and surrealist bent. His most famous creation, The Gashlycrumb Tinies (1962), is an alphabet book detailing the grim fates of 26 children (“A is for Amy who fell down the stairs…”) and perfectly encapsulates his macabre humor . He also frequently published under playful anagrams of his name, such as Ogdred Weary .
Theater, Mystery!, and Later Life
Gorey’s influence extended far beyond the page. He achieved mainstream fame for his costume and set designs for the 1977 Broadway revival of Dracula, which won him a Tony Award for Best Costume Design . In 1980, his distinctive, animated title sequence for the PBS series Mystery! became iconic, introducing his gothic sensibility to millions of American viewers . Despite the British feel of his work, he rarely left the United States. In his later years, he lived year-round in a sprawling, cat-filled 18th-century sea captain’s house in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, which is now the Edward Gorey House Museum . He remained a fixture of the local community, writing and directing puppet shows, until his death in 2000 from a heart attack. He left the bulk of his estate to support the welfare of cats, dogs, and other animals.
