The Man Who Invented Worlds: Lord Dunsany and the Birth of Modern Fantasy

Lord Dunsany
Lord Dunsany

An Anglo-Irish Inheritance

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, the 18th Baron Dunsany and known to the literary world simply as Lord Dunsany, was born in London on July 24, 1878, into one of Ireland’s most ancient noble families. The family seat, Dunsany Castle in County Meath, had been in Plunkett hands for over five centuries, a continuity of land and title that deeply shaped his sense of timelessness and tradition. Standing six feet four inches tall—a height inherited from his mother, a cousin of the explorer Sir Richard Burton—he cut an imposing and memorable figure. Educated at Cheam, Eton, and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, he received a thorough classical grounding that later lent his prose the cadences of Greek myth and the King James Bible. He inherited his barony in 1899 upon his father’s death and married Lady Beatrice Child Villiers, daughter of the Earl of Jersey, in 1904. Their only child, Randal, was born two years later.

Soldier, Sportsman, and Polymath

Dunsany refused the stereotype of the reclusive writer. He served as a second lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards during the Second Boer War and volunteered as a captain in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during World War I. In a remarkable episode during the Easter Rising of 1916, he drove into Dublin while on leave to offer assistance and was wounded by a bullet that lodged in his skull—from which he fully recovered without lasting damage. During World War II, he served in both the Irish Army Reserve and the British Home Guard. Beyond soldiering, he was at various times the chess champion of Ireland and the pistol champion of Ireland, and he invented an asymmetrical chess variant still known today as Dunsany’s Chess. A keen big-game hunter and traveler, he roamed Africa and the Americas, adventures that later surfaced in his fiction.

The Architect of Modern Fantasy

Dunsany’s literary career began in earnest in 1905 with The Gods of Pegāna, a collection of short stories for which he initially had to pay for publication himself. The book invented an entirely original mythological pantheon and a fictional cosmos, creating one of the first fully realized “secondary worlds” in modern English literature and laying essential groundwork for the fantasy genre as it is now understood. His early collections—including Time and the Gods (1906), The Sword of Welleran (1908), and A Dreamer’s Tales (1910)—are written in a lush, incantatory prose style and evoke a dreamlike realm of forgotten gods, impossible cities, and borderlands beyond ordinary time. His influence on other writers was immediate and profound. H. P. Lovecraft considered him one of the four modern masters of horror and admitted that Dunsany’s “remote world of dream” permanently reshaped his own imaginative landscape. Later admirers included J. R. R. Tolkien, Jorge Luis Borges, and Arthur C. Clarke.

The Novelist and Playwright

In the 1920s, Dunsany turned more consistently to the novel, producing his most famous work, The King of Elfland’s Daughter (1924), a lyrical masterpiece about a mortal lord who hunts the unicorn and wins an elven princess, only to discover that magic and mundane life do not easily coexist. He also created Joseph Jorkens, an elderly raconteur who spins improbably tall tales in a gentlemen’s club in exchange for whiskey—a recurring character who appeared in five collections between 1931 and 1954. Dunsany was also a highly successful playwright, with works running on Broadway and in London’s West End, and he received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin in recognition of his contributions to Irish literature.

Final Years and Enduring Legacy

Lord Dunsany died in Dublin on October 25, 1957, following an attack of appendicitis. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Peter and St. Paul in Shoreham, Kent, the village where he had spent his final years. Today, he is remembered as a foundational figure in fantasy and weird fiction—a true original whose dreamlike visions opened doors that countless later writers have walked through.
